Golding, P. and P. Harris (eds) (1997) Beyond Cultural Imperialism: Globalisation, Communication and the New International Order, London, Sage
This is a collection of essays covering all the main issues to do with the media in a global setting. It is important because it has a developing world perspective and it tries to reconnect fundamental ideas of social science with a global order in a state of flux.

Slevin. J. (2000) The Internet and Society, Cambridge, Polity Press
The focus of this book is on the contradictory perceptions of the electronic superhighway as experienced by many individuals, from an acknowledgement of its liberating potential to a fear of its capacity for surveillance. The major issues that it covers include cultural transmission, everyday experience, globalisation and regulation. It is a fascinating introduction to the internet as a 'new medium'.

Dines, G. and J. M. Humez (1995) Gender, Race and Class in the Media, London, Sage
This is a vast reader, full of interesting contributions around a number of themes, encompassing ethnicity, class, sexuality and gender. It includes contributions on advertising, representation, television, music and theoretical approaches. It includes some postmodern theorising as well. It is well worth dipping into.
