Making Social Life: Theories of Action and Meaning
Chapter 18  Further reading and weblinks

Morris, L. (1994) Dangerous Classes: the Underclass and Social Citizenship, Routledge, London
This book provides a valuable account of the notion of the underclass, both in historical terms (since the early nineteenth century) and conceptually within theories of social stratification. A strength of the work is her discussion of the feminisation of poverty, an issue often neglected in debates about the underclass.

Barton, L. and M. Oliver (1997) Disability Studies, The Disability Press, Leeds
This is an edited collection of articles that serves as a good introduction to the area of the sociology of disability. Other work by Len Barton in this area (for example, Clough, P. and L. Barton (1998) Articulating with difficulty, Paul Chapman, London) is also worth dipping into.

Phillipson, C. (1998) Reconstructing Old Age: new agendas in theory and practice, Sage Publications, London
This offers a relatively up-to-date overview of issues concerning the old, examining both theoretical developments and social policies.

Loader, B. (1998) Cyberspace Divide: equity, agency and policy in the information age, Routledge, London
This offers an opportunity to explore social divisions as they work through an area of contemporary importance and development. Social divisions addressed include age, class and gender.
