Gender Relations
Chapter 6 Discussion Questions

  • What are some of the ways in which ideal bodies of today - for girls and boys, women and men - differ from ideal bodies in the past? How were these ideals transmitted in the past? How are they transmitted today?
  • How is a 'mother' different from a 'father' in our society - that is, what are the different expectations attached? Does this have any effect on the way that men and women see themselves in society?
How powerful are the media in the way that they portray men and women? Does the media speak with one voice about masculinity and femininity?
  • Are there any signs that suggest that the double standard of sexual morality has been eroded as we commence the twenty-first century? Or, on the contrary, is there any evidence to suggest that a greater tolerance of male sexual expressiveness remains a key feature of gender relations?
