Getting ahead - the key concepts
Sociological terminology can sometimes seem elaborate and even obscure to students new
to the discipline. But sociologists need it in order to be able to debate ideas precisely
and thus refine their theories about social life. Being able to use sociological concepts
effectively in evaluating others' arguments and developing your own is crucial to
demonstrating your understanding of the subject and so, of course, to achieving good
grades for your work.
The sheets downloadable from this page list the important concepts that crop up in each
of the chapters of our book and which you're likely to encounter in lectures based on
these. Print them off in advance of the relevant lecture and write in all the definitions
you can, looking up those you are uncertain of, in order to ensure that you go to your
lectures well prepared.
These templates for key concepts are for download
as Word documents. Each document is about 50 KB
