John Bratton

John is Professor of Sociology at Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, Canada. He was the first Director of the Workplace Learning Research Unit at the University of Calgary. He has served on the faculties of Leeds Business School at Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Bradford and the Open University, England.

John’s research interests focus on the politics of technology, leadership and workplace learning. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Workplace Learning and Leadership .

In addition to co-authoring this book, he is coauthor (with Jeff Gold) of Human Resource Management: Theory and practice , now in its fourth edition; co-author (with P Sawchuk, J Helms-Mills and T Pyrch) of Workplace Learning: A critical introduction (2004); co-author (with Keith Grint and Debra Nelson) of Organizational Leadership (2005); author of Japanization of Work: Managerial studies in the 1990s ; and co-author (with Jeremy Waddington) of New Technology and Employment (1981).

Militza Callinan

Militza lectures in organizational behaviour and human resource management at Leeds University Business School, England. Her main research interests are in the area of individual differences, particularly personality and work behaviour, as well as the related area of employee selection and development.

Currently she is engaged in a project funded by the ESRC, investigating conscious deception by job applicants during selection procedures. A second project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, is exploring the accuracy with which personality measures can predict people’s behaviour. A third area of research involves the effect of personality in groups.

Carolyn Forshaw

Carolyn lectures in professional writing at Thompson Rivers University. She has had over 25 years’ experience in the field in Britain and Canada. Her research interests include gender and language, post-colonial literary theory and Canadian and Caribbean literature.

Peter H Sawchuk

Peter is cross-appointed to the Sociology of Education and Industrial Relations departments at the University of Toronto. He teaches, researches and writes in the areas of technology, learning, work and the labour movement.

His latest books include Adult Learning and Technology in Working-Class Life (Cambridge, 2003); Workplace Learning: A critical introduction (Garamond, 2004); Hidden Dimensions of Knowledge: Organized Labour in the Information Age (co-authored with D Livingstone; Rowman and Littlefield, 2004); and, most recently, Critical Perspectives on Activity: Explorations of education, work and everyday life (co-edited with N Duarte and M Elhammoumi; Cambridge 2006).

Ron Smith

Ron Smith has a PhD from the University of Leeds, and an MA, a BEd and a DipEd from the University of Calgary. He is an Assistant Professor at Thompson Rivers University and his teaching areas include science writing, business communication, journalism and film studies. He has been published in Technical Communication; Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television; Textual Studies in Canada; Scope Film Journal; and Historical Studies in Education.

Justine Wheeler

Justine has a BA from the University of Calgary and an MLIS from the University of Alberta. She has over 11 years of expertise as a business librarian at the University of Calgary. She works extensively in the online environment, including providing library support for students at a distance. She has spoken at numerous national and international conferences, where her presentations focus on the issues surrounding serving students through online resources.
