Intstructors Manual - Suggested course structures
Introduction
We will give suggestions for three courses where we think the book Innovation Management: Strategy and Implementation Using the Pentathlon Framework can be used. These are:
- MBA electives on innovation and technology management. In this document we give details of an eight-session, 32-hour elective that we have taught at a number of business schools.
- Executive education courses. When we teach executives on innovation management, we normally run three-day workshops covering each of the five elements of the Pentathlon Framework. Increasingly, such workshops are highly-customized in-company undertakings which focus on the organization’s main weaknesses (e.g. portfolio management; or new product development). The appropriate material from our MBA elective is selected, with an emphasis on presenting practical tools and techniques to address the company’s issues and generate an action plan for improving innovation performance.
- Management courses for engineering students. Students studying for engineering degrees often need to study aspects of management. We describe a programme of 9 short sessions on innovation, which can be accommodated within the main degree course structure.
For each of the above three courses, we will explain the key issues with course design and suggest suitable structures. In the following sections we will refer to students (either on MBA or engineering programmes) and delegates or executives (managers on short courses on innovation).
