Country data table

The country data table appears on pages 607 to 612 of the book. An electronic version (in Microsoft® Excel) has been made available online so that you and your students can manipulate the information. For example, you can re-order the countries by GDP, population or literacy rate and consider the patterns that emerge.

Permission to use the country data table
With the exception of data referred to in the second footnote (below), all country data is used courtesy of The Statesman’s Yearbook
(www.statesmansyearbook.com). Lecturers are permitted to download and save the Excel data file entitled ‘Country data table.xls’ and use it with up to 250 students on their IB courses. The file may be uploaded to the institution’s VLE for the duration of the IB module, but must be removed thereafter. Notes on the country data table:
The data provided are the latest available to The Statesman’s Yearbook researchers, and may refer to different years under each heading, as some countries are more up to date in data collection than others. Countries differ in how they collect information, how frequently they update it and how they report data to the many international bodies such as the UN and World Bank, which gather statistics. This book contains much data from these sources, which may therefore differ slightly from that in this chart. Data is included for countries with governments able to provide reasonably reliable, up-to-date information. Countries where such information is not available (such as Afghanistan and North Korea) have therefore been excluded from the list. All monetary values have been converted to US$ following the exchange rate as at 1 January 2008.
