Studies in Economic Transition

General Editors: Jens Holscher, Reader in Economics, University of Brighton; and Horst Tomann, Professor of Economics, Freie University, Berlin.

This new series has been established in response to a growing demand for a greater understanding of the transformation of economic systems. It brings together theoretical and empirical studies on economic transition and economic development. The post-communist transition from planned to market economies is one of the main areas of applied theory because in this filed the most dramatic examples of change and economic dynamics can be found. The series aims to contribute to the understanding of specific major economic changes as well as to advance the theory of economic development. The implications of economic policy will be a major point of focus.

Monetary Integration in Europe
Horst Tomann

The European Economic and Monetary Union comprises twelve member states and forms a currency area of considerable size and, until now, remarkable stability. However, discussion is going on whether it can survive as an institution providing the highest degree of monetary integration which is a single monetary policy for a group of member countries with divergent economic performance.

Industrial Competitiveness and Restructuring in Enlarged Europe
How Accession Countries Catch Up and Integrate in the EU
Iraj Hashi , Paul J. Welfens and Anna Wziatek-Kubiak

Using a Schumpeterian approach, this book views competitiveness as the outcome of rivalry and competition between industries of the three new and the old EU member states leading to the integration of the accession countries into the EU. It investigates the impact of a range of factors such as restructuring, the government's tax and subsidy policies, productivity and unit labour cost (relative to EU 15), the quality of products, investment, innovation, and networking on changes in the competitiveness of three-digit industries in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic in the pre-accession period.
