Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier

© SpringerReagan: reaching for greatness in distant stars

Ronald Reagan said, “In the limitless reaches of space, we will find liberation.” He told the crew of the space shuttle that through them, “We feel as giants again.” In outer space, he saw the final frontier for American leadership. However, this book reveals that despite memorable rhetoric, the legacy of his eight years’ presidency is of more pragmatic practice. After it hit disaster, he returned the shuttle to regular operation. He approved the development of a space station. He made more calls to NASA astronauts as they orbited the earth than any other president. But NASA’s budget share remained fundamentally unchanged.
