About this book

The European Union clearly matters for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). EU officials and European political entrepreneurs has been crucial in the promotion of funding and access opportunities, but they have been proven to have little capacity to use CSOs for their own purposes.

Reviews

“A valuable contribution to the richly developing literature on the Europeanization of civil society. Combining a political sociology perspective with public policy insights, she examines CSOs primarily as dependent variables upon which the EU impacts through a number of factors such as access or funding … . This book is an excellent resource for scholars and students working in this field.” (Markus Thiel, Journal of Common Market Studies, Vol. 54 (1), 2016)

"Quite simply the best study to date of the Europeanization of civil society organizations (CSOs). Through meticulous research on four policy fields in three Member States as well as the European Union (EU) itself, Rosa Sanchez Salgado demonstrates that national CSOs are more Europeanized and European CSOs more autonomous than is widely believed. In so doing, she challenges many entrenched assumptions in what has become a highly ideological academic and political debate. Her book will be required reading for anyone concerned with the evolving relationship between organized civil society and the EU, and its implications for the democratic legitimacy of Europe's multi-level polity." - Jonathan Zeitlin, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

"One of the first questions I am asked by audiences is whether EU funding compromises those who receive it. I can now refer them to this book with confidence that they will find what they need to answer this question for themselves." - Justin Greenwood, College of Europe, Belgium
