Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL INFORMATION

Why are you offering etextbooks bundled with the printed text?
Etextbooks provide a range of online features to support and enhance learning. By purchasing an etextbook alongside the printed text, students gain a great deal of functionality for very little additional cost.

What is an etextbook and is it the same as the printed text?
The etextbook is an electronic version of the text delivered on the web. It contains the complete text (including all illustrations and problems/quizzes) integrated with significant media tools (e.g. interactive flashcards, animated tutorials and hands-on research experiments).

What special features does an etextbook have?
The etextbook contains a number of dynamic resources that are not available in a printed text, for example:

  • Full text search option for key terms, concepts, and sections.
  • Integrated study tools, such as animated tutorials, web links, interactive chapter summary review exercises, and self quizzes.
  • Electronic bookmark feature that allows you to go back and review key sections of the text.
  • Notes feature that allows you to annotate the etextbook as you work.
  • A virtual highlighter that allows you to highlight any portion of the etextbook.

How easy is an etextbook to use?
Very: it is much like using the standard navigation in your Web browser. In just one mouse click you can move between pages, sections or chapters of the book. With another click you can search the entire book for a key term or click on a web link for additional content. No complicated installation process is required. There are some technical and software requirements for each etextbook; to learn more, please see the technical issues section below.

How do I use an etextbook alongside the printed book?
Each etextbook page includes a reference to the printed page number, so you can easily cross-reference to your printed edition if necessary.

Can I access etextbooks for other products?
All books with etextbooks available for subscription across the UK and Europe are listed above. If a title is not given here, then it is not yet available outside the US.

SAMPLING

Can I see a preview of an etextbook?
All extextbooks have a preview chapter available. These can be accessed by going to www.ebooks.bfwpub.com, selecting the title you wish to use and clicking on "PREVIEW".

Can I arrange a demonstration of an etextbook?
If you are a lecturer who would like to arrange a demonstration of an etextbook, please contact your local sales representative.
You sales representative can also arrange for you to receive three week lecturer access to the site, should you require this before making your adoption decision.

PURCHASING

How do I purchase an etextbook bundle?
Etextbooks are only available when bundled with a printed text, and these bundles can only be supplied when the printed book is being adopted for course use in the UK or Europe.

  • If you are a lecturer in the UK or Europe who would like to adopt the etextbook bundle for your course, please contact your local sales representative.
  • To help you make an adoption decision, your local sales representative can arrange for you to receive three week lecturer access to the site and an inspection copy of the printed text. Once you confirm your adoption, your access to the etextbook will be made permanent.
  • If you are a student and your lecturer has assigned you the bundle option as your course text, speak to them to establish which bookshop will be stocking the products you require.

How much does an etextbook bundle cost?
The price of the etextbook is the price of the hardback printed text plus £5.

Can I purchase the etextbook on its own without the printed text?
No, in the UK and Europe etextbooks are only available when purchased as part of a package with the printed text.

Can etextbook bundles be ordered online?
No, in the UK and Europe, etextbook bundles can only be purchased through bookshops where a lecturer has requested stock to supply a specific course adoption.

What is the refund or cancellation policy?
As the etextbooks are purchased as part of a bundle, and access is on a subscription basis, there is no refund or cancellation available.

Can etextbooks be offered as a site-license to Universities or libraries?
Currently, etextbooks must always be purchased as part of a bundle with the printed text, following adoption by a lecturer. This is a term of the agreement we have with our US sister company and is non-negotiable. The etextbooks are therefore not available for site-licensing or to libraries.

REGISTRATION AND SUBSCRIPTION

How do I activate my account?
Simply go to www.ebooks.bfwpub.com and select the appropriate title, or log on directly to your etextbook's specific website (this will be listed alongside the activation code inside your book). From the homepage select "REGISTER" and then input the unique registration code that came bundled inside your textbook.

How long does the etextbook subscription last?
The etextbooks available with the book bundles in UK and Europe are active for 18 months from the date of activation.

Can a subscription be renewed?
Lecturer access is permanent and will not need to be renewed. Students can purchase a subscription to renew an account for an additional period of time if required. All notes, highlighting and bookmarks are preserved upon re-subscription. Please contact our etextbook Help Team ebooks@palgrave.com if extended access is required.

FUNCTIONALITY

Can the etextbook be downloaded to my computer?
No, the etextbook can only be viewed online.

Can I print the etextbook?
Users can print all comments made in the etextbook from the Notes window, either by chapter or for the entire book at once. Users are not able to print the etextbook chapters or the site as a whole due to copyright restrictions.

How do I annotate the text?
The basic note is a text-only insertion onto an etextbook page. Simply click the "Add Note" link in the top right hand corner to insert a note on any page, and then type the text you want. To emphasise certain words, bold and italic text can easily be added to the note text by clicking the appropriate buttons in the Add Note window.

Can I insert my own multimedia resources into my etextbook notes?
Yes, in addition to text, you can add links to multimedia resources into your annotated etextbook using the different buttons in the Add Note window. For example, by clicking on the Image button you can upload any image (either jpeg or gif). The Links button lets you add a link from the etextbook to any online web site. For example, you could link to web pages, PDF files, videos, PowerPoint presentations and Word documents.

Can I share my notes?
Within the Add Note window, notes can be set to Private (only seen by the author of the note), Public (can be seen by other users if the note author shares their ID) or Shared (can be seen and edited by other users if the note author shares their ID). For information about sharing access select the ABOUT NOTE TYPES drop down in the Add Note editing box.
If you are a lecturer, you can arrange for students to see your notes by giving them your ID. Students will be prompted to add this when they first log in to the etextbook, and from then on they will automatically see any new notes you post. You can include more than one annotation set, making it easy to have different sets for different courses or sections. This content will appear right in the pages of the etextbook as your students browse the pages. After log in, students can access lecturer notes by locating and selecting the "Subscribe to another Annotation Set" link in the settings window and entering the Annotation Set ID number they require.

Can I customise the etextbook?
You can annotate the etextbook, but the option to customise the overall product and only purchase certain chapters is not available in the UK and Europe currently.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

What software is required to view an etextbook?
Etextbooks are designed to be viewed in a current version of a standard web browser. For Windows this requires Internet Explorer v6.0 or above or Firefox v1.0 or above. For the Macintosh, Safari 1.0 or above is recommended. To utilize the full multimedia capabilities, you should also have current versions of Macromedia Shockwave 8.5 or above, Flash 6.0 or above, Apple QuickTime 6.0 or above. Some of the Etextbooks also require Java 1.1 or higher.
You may visit the etextbook System Check page (housed in the upper left hand corner of the opening etextbook table of contents page) to confirm that all the necessary software is installed. Also, pop-up blockers may need to be turned off to view the etextbook.

Can I change the way the etextbook displays?
Yes, there is a Settings option in each etextbook (located on the top far left hand corner of your opening screen) that allows you to change the size and colour of the text font, font size, text alignment and text colour of linked terms.

How can I link from an outside course management system that I might be using like WebCT or Blackboard?
If you are a lecturer who would like to link to a specific page of an etextbook from Blackboard or WebCT (or any other course management system or website), include the text "?page=XXX" at the end of the link, where XXX is either a printed page number or a chapter section number. (Don't forget to add the ? before the word "page"). If you are not logged into the etextbook when you click this type of link from Blackboard or WebCT, you will be asked to log in before jumping to the page or section. However, subsequent clicks to etextbook links will allow you to jump to the page or section without having to log in again.
