Palgrave Macmillan wins ISA Global Health Prize again

March 29, 2017, Shanghai – The International Studies Association (ISA) has recently granted HIV/AIDS in China and India - Governing Health Security the 2017 Global Health Section Book Prize. The book was authored by Catherine Yuk-ping Lo, a Research Fellow of the Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong. This is the second year in a row that a book published by Palgrave Macmillan has won this prize.

ISA offers several awards in recognition of outstanding papers, books, achievement, and service in the field of international studies. The Global Health Section (GHS) Book Prize recognizes the best book on any aspect of global health published in the previous two years.  The prize recipient may come from any country and is selected by a committee appointed by the Global Health Section.

The book by Catherine Yuk-ping Lo is the only winner for this section. It compares the policy approaches taken by China and India in dealing with HIV/AIDS. The author applied the securitization theory with some modifications to address the original shortcomings of the theory.

“Through extensive interviews in both countries and through a process of discourse analysis, Lo interrogates the extent to which the disease has been successfully securitized at both the national and sub-national levels at the same time as offering a new framework of analysis for securitization theory,” the judges expressed their views in a combined comment.

In 2016, Managing Global Health Security: The World Health Organization and Disease Outbreak Control, published by Palgrave Macmillan, won the GHS Book Prize. It was authored by Adam Kamradt-Scott, Senior Lecturer in International Security Studies at the Centre for International Security Studies, University of Sydney, Australia.
