The aim of this website is to provide information about the book, and to give you access to the audio files presented in each chapter.
Analysing Conversation: An Introduction to Prosody is written for students and researchers of spoken language, who have no previous knowledge of phonetics and phonology, and who would like to incorporate an understanding of prosody in their study and investigation of natural talk.
As spoken interaction is not possible without prosody, the skills of describing and analysing the ‘musical aspects of speech’ are a vital aspect of a multi-modal investigation of language.
The book provides a practical introduction to the prosody of spontaneous conversation, with a strong focus on recordings of real-life interactions. In addition to introducing the main prosodic features pitch, time, loudness and voice quality, the book also gives an insight into the interactional analysis of language-in-use.
I hope you will enjoy the book, and will have fun analysing the audio files!
