Chapter 11  Social behaviour and professional interactions


This chapter, concerned with one-to-one and group interactions, is divided into
three sections. After reading through it, you should be able to:

  • Describe the core qualities of therapeutic communication
  • Identify six therapeutic interventions and suggest ways in which these might be implemented in your practice
  • Describe the difference between primary and secondary groups
  • Describe the interdependence of team, task and individual needs
  • Discuss the importance of assertiveness to nursing practice
  • Describe the process for refusing requests and handling criticism
  • Reflect on further areas of study to enhance your own therapeutic communication skills.
