Chapter 11 Social behaviour and professional
interactions
This chapter, concerned with one-to-one and group interactions, is divided into
three sections. After reading through it, you should be able to:
- Describe the core qualities of therapeutic communication
- Identify six therapeutic interventions and suggest ways in which these might be
implemented in your practice
- Describe the difference between primary and secondary groups
- Describe the interdependence of team, task and individual needs
- Discuss the importance of assertiveness to nursing practice
- Describe the process for refusing requests and handling criticism
- Reflect on further areas of study to enhance your own therapeutic communication skills.
