Chapter 14 The politics of health care
This chapter explores the wider context of health care, looking at how health-care policy
is made. The first section describes the British political system and the parts of the
process that contribute to the formation of health policy. The second section examines
some health policies and legislation that affect nursing and midwifery practice today.
First, the whole structure of the NHS is described.
Next, we turn to an outline of the legal structures that govern the professions of
nursing, midwifery and health visiting. Finally, specific branches of practice are
discussed in relation to the legislation that provides a framework for practice.
After completing this chapter, you will be able to:
- Outline the key political institutions involved in the development of social
policy
- Justify the need for nurses to have a knowledge of social policy
- Describe the key features of policy relating to midwifery, childrenfs nursing and
mental health and learning disability practice
- Discuss the development of the statutory regulation of nursing, midwifery
and health visiting.
