Chapter 3  Safety in Practice


This chapter will provide the reader with a broad introduction to moving and
handling, infection control, basic food hygiene and the administration of
medications. It is intended that this chapter will provide students with the essential knowledge to carry out nursing practice in a manner that will safeguard them and those patients/clients in their care. At the end of this chapter, you should be able to:

  • Describe and explain the principles of moving and handling, infection
    control, food hygiene and drug administration
  • Undertake a risk assessment
  • Describe a range of strategies for the optimum safety for staff and clients
    when moving and handling
  • Describe the role of the nurse in infection control
  • Describe the importance of good food hygiene
  • Extend your range of skills in drug administration.
