Chapter 4 Eating and drinking


The purpose of this chapter is to encourage you to apply the essentials of nutrition and hydration to your everyday life and that of your clients. At the end of the chapter, you should be able to:

  • Describe and explain the principles of a healthy diet and fluid intake
  • Enable others to make healthy changes to their food and fluid intake
  • Assess clients'  nutritional and hydration status
  • Assist clients in achieving optimum nutrition and hydration
  • Suggest a range of helpful strategies for use when feeding and hydrating
    clients
  • Extend your range of skills in promoting effective nutrition and hydration
  • Promote the dignity of the client needing nutritional support.

There will be reflective activities, activities for you to undertake, reading activities, case histories and review questions to ensure that you interact with the material in a useful and practical way.
