Chapter 6 Respiration and circulation


The purpose of this chapter is to examine factors associated with respiratory and cardiac function. It will explore the nursefs role in relation to assessing and implementing care with clients who experience difficulties of maintaining breathing and circulation. At the end of the chapter, you should be able to:

  • Monitor and interpret a clientfs respiratory and cardiac vital signs
  • Rationalise common deviations from normal values
  • Identify techniques for maintaining cardiorespiratory function
  • Assist clients in maintaining effective cardiorespiratory function
  • Recognise the signs of cardiorespiratory arrest
  • Describe the appropriate response and initial management of a collapsed
    client.
