Chapter 7 Body Image and Sexuality

The expression of sexuality and body image appear to be interrelated, particularly when associated with physical or mental illness, disease or physical trauma. Sexuality, sexual health and body image can, when negatively affected, decrease a person's self-image and self-esteem. When individuals have contact with a health-care setting, their illness or disability will probably impact on their sexuality (RCN, 2000). There can be many adjustments to sexuality and body image, and with these can come changes to self-care (Salter, 1997). The nurse has a vital role to play here.

After reading this chapter, you will be in a better position to:

  • Understand the interrelationship between sexuality and body image and
your responsibility in understanding these two important aspects of a person
  • Recognise the part you will play in helping patients and clients when body
image and sexuality need to be addressed as an aspect of patient care
  • Recognise your own feelings with respect to these areas
  • Realise the importance of your own self-awareness when communicating
with patients and clients who want support and guidance with their sexuality and altered body image needs.
