Chapter 9 Dying, death and spirituality


This chapter is concerned with dying, death and loss. It will introduce you to the
concept of death and begin to examine some of the principal aspects of pallia-tive
care. At the end of the chapter, you should be able to:

  • Reflect on the nature of death in todayfs society
  • Discuss the concept of death
  • Explore how and when people die
  • Identify the key principles of palliative care
  • Discuss the principles of pain and symptom control
  • Reflect on the nature of communication with patients who are dying and
    their relatives
  • Identify the measures required in caring for a body after death
