The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) replaced the UK Central Council for Nursing (UKCC) and the four national boards in April 2002. It is an organisation set up by Parliament to ensure nurses, midwives and health visitors provide high standards of care to their patients and clients. To achieve its aims, the NMC:
·    maintains a register of qualified nurses, midwives and health visitors;
·    sets standards for education, practice and conduct;
·    provides advice for nurses, midwives and health visitors;
·    considers allegations of misconduct or unfitness to practise due to ill health.

The Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) was set up by the UK government to improve the quality of patient care in the NHS across England and Wales. It aims to improve the quality of patient care and to raise standards in the NHS by:
·    assessing every NHS organisation and making its findings public
·    investigating when there is serious failure
·    checking that the NHS is following national guidelines
·    advising the NHS on best practice

The Royal College of Nursing represents nurses and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health policies.
