Series Philanthropy and Education

Philanthropy and American Higher Education follows the issues that have persisted in giving and receiving philanthropy to American colleges and universities from the seventeenth century to present day. Through historical, philosophical, economic and legal perspectives, along with data analysis, Thelin and Trollinger outline their belief that support of higher education through philanthropy is central to the historic and future character of colleges and universities. This timely work is essential to the present and future financial planning and academic direction of institutions, and the future of philanthropy for colleges and universities across the country.

John Thelin is Professor of Higher Education and Public Policy at the University of Kentucky, USA. He is former president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) and received the ASHE Award for Outstanding Research.

Richard W. Trollinger is Vice President for College Relations at Centre College, USA. He received the 2009 CASE Grenzebach Award for outstanding Ph.D. dissertation on philanthropy and education, and the CASE Grenzebach Award for outstanding published research in 2013 with co-author John Thelin.

"Thelin and Trollinger are among the very few historical scholars with the experience and expertise to construct a history of philanthropy and the capacity to analyze the role of philanthropy in the evolution of American higher education. We need to understand how philanthropists and philanthropy have influenced the development of our colleges and universities in order to develop a more critical and thoughtful attitude toward the role of giving in setting higher education policy." - Stanley N. Katz, recipient of the National Humanities Medal; Lecturer with rank of Professor in Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, USA, and Director, Princeton University Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies, The Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University
"Thelin and Trollinger have given us a wonderful introduction to the history and issues related to philanthropy and the role of philanthropy in higher education. This book will provide useful background information for future college presidents, higher education fundraising executives, and those involved in managing college and university endowments." - Eugene Tempel, Founding Dean, Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Indiana University, USA
