Water insecurity has emerged as a major global issue. But there is very little discussion on how social policy can contribute to addressing water insecurity. This book critically discusses the relevance and importance of social policy and social policy practice for water issues. It analyses several complex interrelated perspectives on water and points out their implications for social policies and suggests core values and principles as bases for formulating and implementing social policies. Manohar Pawar argues for universal free access to safe drinking water for all, particularly for the most poor and disadvantaged. A framework for social policy action shows how multidisciplinary professionals can effectively participate to facilitate fair distribution of water to sustain ecosystems and realise the human right to water. Students and educators from a range of disciplines (sociology, social work, welfare, politics, economics, human geography, development studies, community development and law), policy makers in government and non-government organisations, and water workers will find this analysis particularly useful.

Manohar Pawar is Professor of Social Work at Charles Sturt University, Australia. He has over thirty years of experience in social work education, research and practice in Australia and India. His current research, funded by the Australian Research Council's Discovery Project, focuses on virtues and social work practice. He has received a number of awards, including the Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (Australian Learning and Teaching Council, 2008) and the Quality of Life Award (Association of Commonwealth Universities, 2001). His recent and forthcoming publications include: International Social Work: Issues, Strategies and Programs (with D. Cox, 2013), Social and Community Development Practice (2014), Social Work Practice Methods: Reflections on Thinking, Doing and Being (with A. Anscombe, 2014).
