New Year starts with the launch of European Parliament, 2nd edition:

On 27 January, over 100 people gathered in Burson Masteller's Brussels office to celebrate the launch of the second edition of the European Parliament. Champagne and canapés were served as people bought books and the authors, David Judge and David Earnshaw, introduced the new edition. The event was in the heart of Brussels' European quarter: the ideal place to launch a book which has become the definitive guide to the European Parliament and is read by those who make and influence policy in Brussels, as well as students and academics worldwide.

This book examines the political dynamic of the European Parliament within the EU and sets it in the broader context of comparative legislative analysis.

More than 150 people attended a launch of Ireland and the European Union by Brigid Laffan and Jane O'Mahony at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin on Monday 8 December. Over 50 copies were sold on the night.

Speaking at the launch the Taoiseach Brian Cowen warmly welcomed their 'fine new book' which he described as 'scholarly, yet accessible ' and 'a very welcome, valuable and timely contribution'.

'I commend it to anyone who wishes to get a better understanding of the EU and Ireland's relationship with it, past, present and future.' he said.

A new book unraveling the complex web of Scottish politics is to be published on the 25th July 2008.

Neil McGarvey, a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, and Paul Cairney, a lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, have joined forces to write 'Scottish Politics', a major new text specially created for politics students.

Among the first to receive an advance copy was First Minister Alex Salmond when the authors made a visit to the Scottish Parliament with some of their students to watch First Minister's Questions.

Mr McGarvey said: "Politics in Scotland has undergone rapid and constant change since devolution in 1999. We felt it was vital for students to have access to a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute introduction to the key issues that affect them.

"The book brings together new information and analysis based on the latest research, and we hope will support the studies of students across the country."

Dr Cairney added: "The text is designed to help students understand the whole gamut of Scottish political activity, and to consider just how far devolved politics has achieved the aims of its architects for a 'more participative, more creative and less needlessly confrontational' style of politics."

The text provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of contemporary Scottish politics. Taking the major changes that accompanied devolution as its starting point, it examines the move away from Westminster-dominated politics to a new approach that encompasses both local and European concerns.

It also seeks to set Scottish politics within its historical context and incorporates full coverage of the key political institutions, recent constitutional developments and the evolution of new democratic structures.

Scottish Politics is available from all good book shops from priced £20.99. To order your copy now, visit: www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?PID=269877.
