This resource site has been designed to provide support and extension activities for all users of this text whether lecturers organising their teaching around the book or students using it to help direct and reinforce their own learning.

All areas of this Palgrave Macmillan Companion Website have free access for all users.

The Politics One blog can be accessed from this site and gives analysis of the latest developments in Australian politics. The main resources provided on this site are organized on a chapter by chapter basis. These include:

• Quick e-links In many cases there are webpages which provide a brief and easily accessible introduction to topics we canvass in Politics One. Where appropriate we provide quick e-links to these.


• Further reading One of the difficulties that students encounter in studying politics is that political scientists disagree. Political scientists often take different theoretical positions; make different assumptions about the nature of power; and adopt different readings of 'the facts'. Thus it is never a good idea to rely on a single text. We use this website to point you toward chapters and other introductory readings which complement or challenge the explanations of Australian political institutions that we offer in Politics One.


• Discussion points Argument plays a central part in political science. For each topic we suggest a discussion or debating point.


• Useful links Studying politics nowadays often involves more than carefully reading textbooks. It can involve collecting statistics and other additional information from the websites of government departments, parties and a host of other political actors who maintain web pages. Our list of valuable websites is not comprehensive. The internet is not like a library of scholarly and carefully researched works. We don't list blogs or other websites where the information offered may not be authoritative. But we do provide useful links which can be used to pursue issues or questions raised where we are confident that the information is reliable.


• Updates Textbooks are static and politics is quite fluid. New political issues quickly emerge. Political fortunes can rapidly shift. Examples can soon date. One of our purposes here is to keep Politics One up-to-date by adding material where new elections, changes in political leadership, or other circumstances require this.

Update materials can be accessed from a book-wide list or from the web page for each chapter to which they relate. There are also brief guides to general web materials on Australian politics and to using Politics One for assignments.
