A new addition to the Marxism and Education series

Marxism and the Task of the (Post) Humanities

In the wake of the "theory" revolution, the humanities have changed radically, but the most important transformation is in their interpretive logic, namely the assumptions, discourses, and reading strategies by which they made sense of cultural texts - from novels and poetry to films, videos, cultural events (e.g. sports) and social moments (e.g. Katrina, war). Understanding these changes is necessary because they have great significance in shaping the cultural consciousness and interpretive unconscious of people in their everyday lives. This volume argues that as a result of these changes, humanities have been reduced to teaching communication and the digital and affective skills which are necessary for the contemporary cyber workforce. Consequently the role of humanities, which is to produce critical understanding of cultural meanings and social values in a democratic society, has been diminished. The book proposes a new mode of teaching humanities based on critique and a materialist understanding of language. Order your copy now!

World Scouting

Explaining the origin, evolution, operating system, and the soundness of the Scout movement’s values – for the first time

Many works have been written on scouting worldwide, but most of them were centered in a particular country or moment of history. This book explains in a very comprehensible way the main characteristics of world (boy and girl) Scouting, the largest youth movement in the planet, gathering 30 million people in more than 165 countries of the five continents. Using new data and storytelling, the work covers the main elements that distinguish the scout movement over the world, and explains its origin, evolution, operating system, and the soundness of its values. Order your copy now!

The study of education has a dynamic and diverse history that both grounds the discipline in social and political movements over the centuries but also illuminates the vast theoretical discourse and applications that we continue to welcome, question, and revise into the 21st century. In recent years, as our understanding of social responsibility changes, so does academic attention to early childhood education, reform policies, and our focus on education in developing countries.

Palgrave Macmillan publishes cutting-edge discourse that engages in the interrelated issues of gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, social context, and leadership building from early childhood development through to higher education. Our books focus on the intersection of education policy, issues of diversity and equity, media and communication studies on an international and comparative scale.
