About the list

As the original publisher of Matthew Arnold, Alfred Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, Henry James, Thomas Hardy and W B Yeats Macmillan has, from the very beginning, been renowned for an influential literature list of the highest calibre. A commemorative facsimile of the first edition of the Golden Treasury (originally published by Macmillan in 1861 and the bestselling anthology of English verse for almost a century ) was issued in 2000 with a new foreword by the Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, to mark the launch of the Palgrave Macmillan imprint. The commitment to publishing high quality, cutting edge work continues today with Palgrave Macmillan's literature list attracting well-established authors, including Stephen Orgel, Julia Kristeva, Jerome McGann, Geoffrey Hartman and Catherine Belsey as well as some of the brightest scholars of the next generation.

The Literature list has a full range of publications from monographs to reference books, textbooks to scholarly editions of classic works, including seminal books such as Shakespearean Tragedy by Bradley and The Feminist Reader by Catherine Belsey. The list is aimed at undergraduates and graduate students, teachers, lecturers and academics. We publish books on individual authors, areas of criticism and time periods as well those on Cultural Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies and Creative Writing. We have number of prestigious series including the well established Casebooks and a new series Redefining British Theatre History edited by Peter Holland in association with the Huntington Library. For more information on the series please browse through the series section.
