Palgrave Connect, the e-book platform of Palgrave Macmillan, debuted in February 2009. The database reflects the publisher's excellent editorial oversight and professional publishing standards. Its intuitive interface allows access to a growing database of over 4,000 e-books, updated quarterly. The excellent interface, developed in conjunction with the Nature Publishing Group, is smooth, well designed, and welcoming. The content is as good as it gets for scholarly minds and academic training. The compilation is organized and sold in eight collections: Business and Management, Economics and Finance, History, Language and Linguistics, Literature and Performing Arts, Political and International Studies, Religion and Philosophy, and Social and Cultural Studies. In tune with the burgeoning acquisition of electronic holdings by libraries, the publisher offers a mix of subscription plans. Users have the option of Quick Search, Advanced Search (including author, title, full text, subject/subject subcategories, and more), and Browse (by Collection, Subject, Series, Print Publication Year). Once users click on a book title, they are given the option to Download and to Browse Inside. After users select a book title, they may access List of Contents, Author Biography, and How to Cite This Book (which includes the DOI, or digital object identifier, as specified by the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association). Users may sort citations in a variety of ways and export to the citation management programs RefWorks and EndNote (CH, Feb'08, 45-2929). Another nice feature is the listing of new titles and forthcoming books on the main page. Users may want to check out the Palgrave Macmillan Facebook and Twitter sites to follow authors, book topics, and news from the publisher. This reviewer downloaded three books to a computer's hard drive and then read the text on Amazon's Kindle for the PC and using Adobe Acrobat Reader 9. The clarity of the text is excellent. According to the publisher, Palgrave Connect's e-books are compatible with all PDF e-book readers. The platform structure and interface tools (e.g., Cite This Book) do not download with the book. Access to Palgrave Connect will be very valuable for all academic libraries, with a nudge toward the graduate level. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers.
