Since the early 1990s, Northeast Asia's steel industry has undergone a remarkable restructuring process. The purpose of this book is to examine various aspects of this process, examining key issues involved. The major findings of this volume are that: Northeast Asia's steel industry has consolidated markedly, mainly in response to changes in domestic markets which account for the vast majority of steel sales in the region; the impact of renewed US protectionism in the late 1990s has been minimal in quantitive terms because North America is a very small market for Northeast Asian steel, but the potential for other importers (e.g. China) to pursue similar trade policies is more concerning; and the policy environment has changed dramatically with governments relying more on market mechanisms, and the increase in mergers and strategic alliances has raised potentially important antitrust questions.
