This report presents the findings of a survey of the mental health of carers living in England. The survey was commissioned by the Department of Health and was carried out during 2001, with the sample of people identified as carers on the basis of questions included in the 2000 General Household Survey. The report looks at the extent to which carers experience mental health problems and considers a number of factors associated with an increase of such symptoms, including socio-demographic and health characteristics of carers, the characteristics of those they care for, and the level of support they receive. It also examines the extent to which those carers with mental health needs receive treatment.
