General guidance on language learning

Home > Subject areas > Studying foreign languages > General guidance on language learning

The advice which follows takes into account that you are beginning a taught course rather than a course of self-tuition. You should refer to it regularly!

  • Check the syllabus.
  • Remember your tutor is your guide…
  • …but you do the learning!
  • Attend the class regularly
  • …and participate actively.
  • Work outside the classroom,
  • …constantly reviewing your learning.
  • Be organised.
  • Use the Language Centre or other private study facilities.
  • Learn the grammar and don’t be afraid of grammatical terms.
  • Work from the start on getting pronunciation and intonation right.
  • Remember understanding isn’t the same as producing the language…
  • ….but you don’t have to be sure of every word to get the message.
  • Meet fellow students who are native speakers of the language.
  • Enjoy yourself!
