How to download the datasets

Once you click on the dataset you want (choose from the list here), you'll be offered the option to either OPEN or SAVE the dataset. We suggest that you choose to 'SAVE' the dataset in your computer, either on the desktop or in a folder on your choice. Then start SPSS, click on the 'File' drop-down menu, choose 'Open' and click on 'Data'. A window like the one below will open up. Go to the desktop or folder where you saved the dataset.

Change the 'Files of type' from SPSS (*.sav) to 'SPSS Portable (*.por)' by opening the drop-down menu. You should then see the SPSS portable file of dataset you downloaded. Select the downloaded dataset in order to open the datafile. In the example in the window below, we downloaded three SPSS portable files on to our desktop and have chosen the file for Britain.

Click on the 'Open' button and SPSS will open the dataset. Its name will be 'Untitled' so be sure to use 'Save as' on the 'File' drop-down menu to give the datafile a name of your own and save the data as an SPSS *.sav datafile in the folder of your choice. Below is an example of us saving the SPSS *.sav datafile for Britain.

[For any of this to work, you of course have to have SPSS installed on your computer!]
