Acting Professionally Update – April 2012

In every edition of this book – starting in 1972 – the expectation of an eventual merger of the unions of America’s two major “on camera” performance media has been mentioned, but has never come to pass -- until now. On March 30, 2012, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) officially merged to form SAG-AFTRA, a composite union that now represents more than 150,000 actors, announcers, broadcasters, voiceover artists and many other subgroups working in film, TV, radio, and other electronic or otherwise recorded or transmitted media.

It is difficult to say what the exact ramifications of this change will be. But given that the merger was enthusiastically supported by members of both unions, we believe it will simplify union rules and guidelines and strengthen union leadership.
