About this book

This book offers workable frameworks and theory that school leaders can use to guide their work and engage in critical reflection. Lopez reconceptualises student engagement from an equity and diversity perspective and looks at ways that leaders can be supported on their journey through collaborative mentorship, while bridging the theory to practice gap.

Reviews

“This book captures social justice leadership in action and is much needed, extending the dialogue to the Canadian context.  The empirical research provides compelling evidence on how school leaders and teachers can advance social justice to elevate student engagement. Insightful and provides reflective probes to deepen the dialogue with readers!” (Gaëtane Jean-Marie, Dean of the College of Education and Richard O. Jacobson Endowed Chair of Leadership in Education, University of Northern Iowa, USA)

“This is a much-needed resource for educators and leaders who recognize the need to do something about the persistent and ever-encroaching inequities in our schools and communities. Drawing on current research, as well as her own research and experience, Lopez provides readers with insights into how students, parents, and educators continue to be marginalized in educational institutions. She also deftly illustrates how educators and leaders can employ culturally responsive and social justice leadership practices to counter these oppressive practices. Everyone who recognizes the need to make our schools and communities more inclusive and equitable places will find this accessible and informative book an invaluable tool.” (James Ryan, Associate Professor, Department of Leadership Higher and Adult Education, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada )

“Challenging the received orthodoxies of school leadership, Lopez argues that the responsibilities for schools and social change should lie on the shoulders of the readers of this book.  This is a book that should be read widely because it is not only on school leadership, but on the question of imagining possibilities for each child in our schools. It is an essential read for anyone interested in fundamental thinking about school leadership and social reforms.” (Njoki Wane, Professor of Social Justice Education, University of Toronto, Canada)
