A historical perspective is provided by extracts from works such as Cole's Short History of the British Working Class Movement and R.H.S.Crossman's The God that Failed. Throughout this book the linking commentary emphasises the exciting background of ideas of Marxian, Freudianism and Science and Technology which came to the forefront of the period.
