About the author

Derek was formerly Head of Engineering and the University's Director for Regional Outreach. He joined the Lancaster University after a period as a design structural engineer for consultants and a local authority. His teaching was in the areas of structures and system safety and he was involved in research into intelligent construction robots. Since retirement he has been involved in the design and build of a single-seat racing car.
