About this book

Ukraine has emerged as a new factor on the European security scene since 1991, and this book explores the ramifications of that development. It lays out the views of leading North American, West European, and Ukrainian security analysts on European security issues during the next decade and their priority, strategies for approaching these issues, Ukraine's role in European security, and the Atlantic Community and Ukraine's security. Then it compares these views and assesses the implications of the complex pattern of similarities and differences in perspective.

Reviews

`Ukraine and European Security highlights the important role that Ukraine is likely to play in the future evolution of European security relations. The contributors - Ukrainian, West European and North American alike - bring thoughtful and well-informed perspectives to this unique collection. The diverse presentations all reflect the understanding that, as the parallel processes of NATO and European Union enlargement move on, the critical position of Ukraine between Russia and the West will become even more apparent. This work does not provide all the answers to the many imponderables about Ukraine's future place in Europe, but it asks all the right questions and will be a valuable addition to the literature on European security issues.' - Stanley R. Sloan, US Library of Congress

'The Albright and Appatov volume is a major contribution to the still under-developed area of Ukrainian security studies.' - Taras Kuzio, International Affairs
