About this book

This book explores the topic of ideological manipulation in the translation of children’s literature by addressing several crucial questions, including how target language norms and conventions affect the quality of a translation, how translations are selected on the basis of what is culturally accepted, who is involved in the selection of what should be translated for children in the target culture, and how this process takes place. The author presents different ways of looking at the translation of children’s books, focusing particularly on the practices of intralingual and interlingual translations as a form of rewriting across a selection of European languages. This book will be of interest to Translation Studies and children's literature scholars, as well as those with a wider interest in the impact of ideology on culture.

Reviews

“The slim volume, about 140 pages, is clearly structured. ... Leonardi gives a solid overview of basic aspects of the translation of children's literary works. ... The book thus provides extensive bibliographical references to specialist and research literature, which can serve as a basis for further studies on the topic of her book.” (Jochen Weber, Bookbird, A Journal of International Children's Literature, Vol. 58 (4), 2020)

“Vanessa Leonardi’s work … is devoted to the issue of ideological manipulation of children’s literature in intralingual and interlingual translation. … Leonardi’s monograph demonstrates that inter- and intralingual translations of children’s literature are involved in the ideological conflict between adults’ different and often opposing value systems. Children’s books are not innocent, indeed, and this is especially true of translated books.” (Natalia Paprocka, International Research in Children's Literature, Vol. 15 (3), October, 2022)

“The structure of this book is clear and logical, and each chapter has its own abstract, conclusion and references, which enable the reader to have a more holistic view of the essence of each chapter. Content-wise, it offers a fresh perspective to the studies of ideology in the production of children's literature. ... It is of great academic value ... . It is a useful reference for scholars of not only modern languages and linguistics, but also translation studies and cultural studies.” (Despoina Panou, Babel, Vol. 67 (4), 2021)
