About this book
This volume analyses the role of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its sequels in the evolution of the Gothic. As well as the transformation of the Gothic location—from castles, cemeteries and churches to the modern urban gothic—this volume explores the evolution of the undead considering a range of media from the 19th century protagonist to sympathetic contemporary vampires of teen Gothic. Based on an interdisciplinary approach (literature, tourism, and film), the book argues that the development of the Dracula myth is the result of complex international influences and cultural interactions. Offering a multifarious perspective, this volume is a reference work that will be useful to both academic and general readers.
Reviews
“Dracula: An International Perspective offers a kaleidoscopic view of how Dracula has generated new discourses within the Gothic and how it keeps influencing even our everyday reality. It should be an essential item in libraries of colleges and universities where Stoker’s vampire classic is on the reading list, for it indeed presents a variety of new perspectives of this neveraging novel.” (Ildikó Limpár, Hungarian Journalof English and American Studies, Vol. 25 (1), 2019) “Kudos to Romanian scholar Marius-Mircea Crișan and his thirteen collaborators for producing this volume of insightful essays. This book is yet another testimonial to the enduring power of Stoker’s novel. The subject matter ranges from Edgar Allan Poe to the Pied Piper of Hamelin; the theme of parenting in vampire films to Dracula-centred tourism; the demonization of Italy in Irish Gothic to the Icelandic edition of Dracula. A veritable feast!” (Elizabeth Miller, Professor Emerita of English at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. Co-editor of Bram Stoker’s Notes for Dracula: A Facsimile Edition, 2008)
“Studies of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula—and its countless adaptations—have up to now been dominated by British and American scholars, as part of the revival of interest in the Gothic. This volume adopts a series of fascinating and unusual international perspectives, and in so doing it sheds new light on the novel’s wider resonance. Even though the fictional Dracula had almostnothing to do with the real Romania, Dracula: An International Perspective has been cleverly edited by a Romanian scholar—so there are evidently no hard feelings...” (Sir Christopher Frayling, Professor Emeritus of Cultural History at the Royal College of Art, Fellow of Churchill College Cambridge and author of Vampyres: Genesis and Resurrection, 2016)
