About this book

This handbook is the definitive resource for understanding current mental health policy controversies, options, and implementation strategies. It offers a thorough review of major issues in mental health policy to inform the policy-making process, presenting the pros and cons of controversial, significant issues through close analyses of data. Some of the topics covered are the effectiveness of various biomedical and psychosocial interventions, the role of mental illness in violence, and the effectiveness of coercive strategies. The handbook presents cases for conditions in which specialized mental health services are needed and those in which it might be better to deliver mental health treatment in mainstream health and social services settings. It also examines the balance between federal, state, and local authority, and the financing models for delivery of efficient and effective mental health services. It is aimed for an audience of policy-makers, researchers, and informed citizens that can contribute to future policy deliberations.

Reviews

“This handbook offers a comprehensive look at mental health policy, practice, and research … . The intended audience is students, scholars, policymakers, and those who will need to make informed decisions about mental health practice and policy.” (Natasha A Patterson, Doody's Book Reviews, September 06, 2019)

“Samadia Sadouni has innovatively employed a transnational perspective to examine in comprehensive detail the migration Somali Muslims to South Africa and their settlement in the urban life of Johannesburg.  Her book reveals how Somali migrants, both past and present, have drawn upon religious identities and resources from across the Southern Africa Indian Ocean region to forge inter-ethnic alliances with Indian and Malay South Africans in order to integrate, with enhanced security, into South Africa’s racial and ethnic hierarchies.  Based on extensive ethnographic and archival research, this volume’s incisive analysis provides original insights into the relations between international migration, religion, and social integration in South Africa’s struggles to become what Desmond Tutu called a “rainbow nation.”” (Josh DeWind, Program Director, Social Science Research Council, New York)

“An extraordinary book written by leading figures in mental health policy, The Palgrave Handbook of Mental Health Policy will be a landmark work—one which will guide the field for decades.” (John Monahan, Distinguished Professor of Law, Professor of Psychology, and Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, University of Virginia, USA)

“A timely and important work from a highly accomplished group of mental health policy experts.” (Benjamin Druss, Professor of Health Policy and Rosalynn Carter Chair in Mental Health at Emory University, USA)
