Reviews

“Bangladesh provides an interesting case study of achieving considerable economic progress despite formidable odds. This collection of essays provides insights into how the country’s macroeconomic management has contributed to such progress and what challenges lie ahead. By providing in-depth analyses of macro-financial, fiscal and trade policies and linking such policies with the broader issues of economic growth and poverty alleviation, the book represents an important contribution to the literature on the macroeconomics of development.” (Wahiduddin Mahmud, Former Professor of economics at the University of Dhaka and a member of a former Caretaker Government of Bangladesh in charge of the Ministries of Finance and Planning)

“This book is a welcome addition to the growing literature on Bangladesh's development. The macroeconomic perspective that it provides will meet a long-felt need to better understand Bangladesh's evolving macro-economy underpinning its excellent performance in terms of growth and poverty reduction, and the impact of monetary, fiscal and trade policies. The editor/authors deserve to be felicitated for bringing this rich, eagerly awaited material to our attention.” (Khan Ahmed Sayeed Murshid, Director General, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies)

“The book gives ideas on how macro policies in Bangladesh passed through various phases with different challenges. The performance of the economy of Bangladesh has been captured in the array of essays incorporated in the book. It is significant especially because the papers are written by independent professionals from outside the realm of policy makers and regulators. The book will be useful for all.” (Salehuddin Ahmed, former Governor, Bangladesh Bank)

“This book fills in important lacuna in economic research on Bangladesh by bringing together for the first time serious analytical work on macroeconomic issues facing the country. The authors are well-known authorities in their respective fields, and their work is of uniformly high standard, informed by both rigorous theory and cutting-edge empirical methodology. The book should prove an invaluable resource to researchers and policy-makers both in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the developing world.” (Siddiqur Rahman Osmani, Professor of Economics, Ulster University, UK)
