Your author photo is an important selling tool for your book – it may be included on the book itself, in future promotional materials and on our website. While it is in no way a beauty contest, it is important to look professional and engaging. Please keep in mind the following:
- ATTIRE: - please dress as you would for an important work event. This will vary of course but for most of our authors this means a smart and clean shirt or blouse. Tie is optional. Generally solid colors will work better than complex patterns. Author photos are usually cropped to be head and shoulders shots so something simple and not distracting around the neckline works well.
- SETTING: - don’t stand in front of a visually distracting background (e.g. a room with other people in the background, a kitchen etc.). Outdoor settings are fine. Watch out that there is sufficient contrast between your background and what you are wearing, in case the image is converted to B&W.
- ATTITUDE: - sit up straight, look directly at the camera with confidence, and don’t forget to smile!
- FILE SPECIFICATION: Your author photo should be at least 300 dpi at 3” x 5” (or 900 pixels x 1500 pixels). It should not be blurry, dark, or out-of-focus. Color is preferable, but a B&W photo is OK. We would prefer that you do not send an author photo taken on a smartphone.
If you would like us to use an 'action' photo of you in a setting or attire that is appropriate to the content of your book that is often fine but please consult with your editor first.
