About this book

This book represents the first comprehensive historical treatment of sociology in Russia from the mid-nineteenth century through the pre-revolutionary and Soviet eras to the present day. It sheds new light on the dramatic history of sociology in the Russian context; dramatic both in its relationship with state power, and in the large-scale societal transformations it has had to grapple with. The authors highlight several particularities including the late institutionalization of sociology in the Soviet period, the breaks in continuity between its main historical periods and the relationship between sociology and power throughout its history. This valuable work will appeal to social science and history scholars, as well as readers interested in the history of contemporary Russia.

Reviews

“Larissa Titarenko and Elena Zdravomyslova have done us a great service in recounting the rocky road of Russian sociology. Time and again Russian sociologists were repressed, only to re-emerge, fuelled by renewed energy and resolution. With ingenuity and courage they carved out a precarious space between hostile autocratic regimes and an embryonic civil society. Attentive to both international and national currents Russian sociology continues to exhibit an originality from which we can all learn.” (Michael Burawoy, University of California at Berkeley, USA)

“This book is most welcome. Larissa Titarenko and Elena Zdravomyslova provide an instructive overview of the beginnings of Russian sociology in the second half of the 19th century until today. Due to the manifold developments of Russian history and society they characterize the many attempts to establish sociology as an academic discipline and the main thrust of theories, methods, great figures and well-known studies. How sociology fares in one of the largest societies of the world is of utmost importance.” (Hans-Peter Müller, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany)

“The dramatic history of Russian sociology is told in this impressive account by focusing on the uniquely intimate and conflict-ridden interaction between the discipline and the power and between its main figures and the power over the years from the nineteenth century to the present. The story with its three crises and three new beginnings is put in a broad perspective to show its particular position in the global setting of the science of society.” (Risto Alapuro, Professor of Sociology, University of Helsinki, Finland)
