Reviews

“This volume explores the Arab Gulf States’ relationships with the USA, Iran, and Israel, and includes an analysis of their capacities in coping with regional turmoil and the competition between them. … a useful introduction to the recent and historic relations between Iran and what would become the GCC member states in 1981 … . The book’s value lies primarily in filling some gaps in the current literature on the regional and international relations of the Gulf … .” (Robert Mason, Journal of Arabian Studies, Vol. 6 (1), August, 2016)

“This slim volume provides a useful introduction to the changing politics of the region. It begins with a historical survey of the Gulf sheikhdoms and their ceaseless attempts to secure a steady foundation for their rule. … The Arab Gulf States and Reform in the Middle East is a useful introduction to the complexities of the Gulf.” (Survival, Vol. 58 (2), April-May, 2016)

'Precise in analysis and cogent in its argument, Yoel Guzansky's book provides a detailed yet nuanced account of the regional security dilemmas both internal and external - now facing the dynastic regimes of the Gulf. It will be essential reading for scholars and practitioners alike seeking clarity of thought in a region where for far too long, polemic comment and partisan scholarship has long shrouded informed strategic and political debate.'

Clive Jones, Professor of Regional Security (Middle East), Durham University, UK

'At a time when the Middle East region is experiencing unprecedented turmoil, Yoel Guzansky's book on the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council is an important contribution that not only objectively outlines the current view from GCC capitals but also highlights the inherent contradictions and challenges these countries face in the near future.'

Dr. Christian Koch, Director, Gulf Research Center Foundation, Geneva, Switzerland

'Yoel Guzansky has produced the most up-to-date and comprehensive analysis of the GCC since the Arab uprisings of 2011. He clearly demonstrates how the Gulf countries are 'hedging their bets' against Iran's rise and Washington's retrenchment.'

Prof. Joshua Teitelbaum, Department of Middle Eastern Studies, Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, Bar-Ilan University, Israel
