About this book

This book seeks to comprehensively analyze and document U.S. foreign policy toward a strategic Cold War ally that posed a stark challenge to the traditionally-stated U.S. preference for democracy and political freedom.  It details the complex ways in which the U.S. reacted to that challenge and went about crafting policies of longer-term accommodation with a regime it wished to retain as a close ally in a strategically important part of the world.

Reviews

“Karakatsanis and Swarts do a superb job of demonstrating both the United States' unpreparedness for the April 1967 coup d'etat and the agency of the Greek junta relative to the American government. … the excellent research done by these scholars. … Karakatsanis and Swarts's work will remain a standard in the field for years to come.” (Andre Gerolymatos, Journal of Modern Greek Studies, Vol. 37 (1), May, 2019) “A penetrating and meticulously documented overview of US relations with the Greek junta, tracing shifts from initial surprise and disapproval under Johnson to accommodation under Nixon/Kissinger.” (John O. Latrides, Professor Emeritus, Southern Connecticut State University, USA)

“This pithy, pioneering volume is the first serious scholarly attempt to evaluate and assess United States policy toward the Greek praetorian regime (1967-1974).” (Constantine P. Danopoulos, Professor and President’s Scholar, San Jose State University, USA)

“Based on declassified documents, the book is an important addition to the literature on post-WWII Greece and Greek-US relations.” (Van Coufoudakis, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Indiana University-Fort Wayne, USA)
