About this book

Cultural and spiritual resources are arguably essential to achievement of educational goals, both as economic and political initiatives and as human rights. This book addresses questions surrounding education and inter-cultural understanding in a broad global framework.

Reviews

"This is a special volume full of fine chapters. It is impossible to wholly grasp the extraordinary contribution made by the path-breaking work of Professor Ruth Hayhoe to cultural-historical analysis, East-West dialogue and bringing China to the world - her full effects will only become apparent over the decades to come - but Education and Global Cultural Dialogue honors Ruth and her work as well as could be done. Brilliant!" - Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education, University of Melbourne, Australia

"Ruth Hayhoe has not only been a pioneer of education research and analysis on China, she has also helped to shape this very field for almost half a century. This volume reflects upon many of her research interests, and in doing so provides invaluable insight into China's educational development." - Philip G. Altbach, Monan University Professor and Director of the Center for International Higher Education, Boston College, USA

"This is a remarkable book about the work of a remarkable person that is also an important contribution to the field of comparative education in its own right. It is a powerful demonstration of how part of that field has developed over the decades and ways in which individuals can make a difference." - Mark Bray, UNESCO Chair Professor in Comparative Education, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

"As a scholar and a friend of China, Ruth Hayhoe has devoted her professional life to building a bridge between that country and the rest of the world. Renowned scholars assembled for this book, representing the best minds in the field, pay tribute to this remarkable intellectual cosmopolite through their reflections on pressing issues in comparative education, history of education, and higher education reform in China." - Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Professor of Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, USA and former President of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES)
