About this book

The European Union is becoming increasingly involved in health policy. The Treaties of Maastricht and Amsterdam require the EU to consider health issues in all that it does. Even though the Union has no direct involvement in the delivery of health services its range of responsibilities, including the ramifications for health of the Single European Market, make it a key player. This is the first major academic book solely devoted to EU health and health-related policy.

Reviews

'Randall's book provides a very good guide to the literature and will be a useful source of information to newcomers and as a reference tool for experienced hands...Overall, Randall's book will certainly find a niche as a very useful supplementary text for courses on aspects of European integration and for health policy courses. It may also be of interest to the general reader, for whom it offers an accessible discussion of an important subject.' - Elias Mossialos, London School of Economics and Political Science, London, Health Economics

'The strength of Randall's book lies...in providing an extremely useful and well-documented guide to the health-policy process in the EU...A variety of academics teaching public and social-policy courses, as well as JESP readers with an interest in European health policy, will find it valuable as a significant introduction to the area.' - Journal of European Social Policy

'This timely book reviews the growing effect of the European Union upon health policy - and not just health policy or 'health systems' but health services themselves...Randall's book is readable and is a good introduction to the issues.' - Calum Paton, International Journal of Health Planning and Management

'...a very extensive overview on health related activities of the E.U...I wouldn't be surprised if the book will soon be at the top of any reading list covering European health policy.' - European Health forum Gastein Newsletter

'Ed Randall's book covers a wide range of European health issues and

provides an extremely useful overview of how the EU has in the past, and

will in the future, shape health policy in Europe...[The European Union and Health Policy also contains] an extensive bibliography and documents many useful web sites...an invaluable source of reference.' - European Institute of Social Services Newsletter
