About this book

Electronics is an ever-changing field with an entrepreneurial spirit and a rich history, populated by some of the world's most famous companies and personalities. The Business of Electronics details the field's complex ecosystem in all its trials and tribulations. It looks at companies such as Apple, IBM, Samsung, and Nokia, as well as now-extinct companies such as Honeywell Bull (France) and Sinclair Computers (UK) that contributed to technology and business. Sethi shows us how a handful of US companies led the charge in designing equipment that could make millions of small, reliable components; how Nokia started in the timber business; the history of inventors like J.C. Bose, a pioneer in radio communication (who inadvertently made Guglielmo Marconi famous); and why there are numerous companies and creators that never made it or that we have never heard of. This all-encompassing book not only explores the vibrant history of electronics, it uses case studies to examine the companies and people that made history and explain how we ended up where we are today.

"Connecting the dots in a fascinating manner, Sethi illustrates us how the foundation of our modern day-communication was laid down long ago. I recommend the book for everyone who is interested in electronics, business and the development of technology." - Arja Björklund, Head of Finance, Nokia India Sales Private Limited

"The author brings magnificently into the daylight some of the most remarkable but forgotten inventors whose inventions have helped others to succeed. This new book should definitely be called as a handbook of popular electronics history! It also suits well as a first reading to those studying electronics." - Matti Kerppola, CEO and Founder, Leonis Consulting, Finland

"It was a pleasure to discuss this new book with Dr. Sethi at Mustila in Finland, where Eric Tigerstedt's first electronic laboratories were set up more than 100 years ago. ... It is interesting to read about his contributions in this historical context, making me ever more convinced that he was far ahead of his time." - Peter M.A. Tigerstedt, Professor Emeritus, University of Helsinki, Finland

"In the age when most things modern are taken for granted, The Business of Electronics provides great perspective. It takes the reader through an exciting journey from the very beginnings of many profound inventions to our modern era and faiths of many well-known corporations that have contributed to our life as we live it today. A fascinating and enlightening read!" - Antti Ohrling, Chairman, Ohrling Ltd.; Speaker, The Outstanding Speakers' Bureau
