International Political Economy Series

‘The Palgrave IPE series provides critical inputs on the changing global configurations and emergent politico-economic and social phenomenon in the Global South. Over the past three decades these books have been relevant for diverse constituencies - policy makers, civil society and academics, worldwide.’

Timothy M. Shaw, series editor International Political Economy

The global political economy is under growing pressure as the International Political Economy (IPE) series marks 35 years. Human development, governance and security are all becoming ever more elusive. Established multilateralism is being challenged by growing protectionism, especially across the North Atlantic – even if we are yet to enter a post-hegemonic or -Western world. Meanwhile, capitalisms are reinforced by burgeoning migrations, diasporas and remittances. New regional networks, state and non-state, proliferate everywhere and South-South Cooperation is becoming ever more heterogeneous. Innovative transnational governance advances myriad forms of regulation but is not yet authoritative, while hybrid coalitions seek to respond to the imminent ‘waterenergy- food’ nexus.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is being advanced by ubiquitous transnational corporations in the US and China – FAANG and BAT – yet ‘non-traditional security’ (NTS) from drugs to fundamentalisms is also proliferating, exacerbating global divergences. At the same time digital technologies can facilitate Offshore Financial Centres, cybercrime, social media, mobile finance and gaming.

In 2018, we were absolutely delighted to celebrate the 35th anniversary of our market-leading IPE series this year. The series has been edited by our beloved series editor Tim Shaw since 1983 and has published more than 450 books in its lifetime. Together we have tracked the development of the global political economy in North and South and have had the privilege to work with talented authors, editors and reviewers from around the world.

Take a look at our free chapters and pieces from our authors and editors as they reflect on IPE’s past, present and future.

Let’s celebrate!

We Celebrated IPE's 35th Anniversary at ISA 2018!

The International Studies Association hosted it's 2018 conference in San Francisco this past April 4-7, and Palgrave Macmillan was there to meet attendees and celebrate the 35th anniversary of International Political Economy with a reception during the first night.

The night kicked off with some wine and snacks, as attendees filled the hall to greet series Editor Tim Shaw and Publisher Christina M. Brian followed by cake and conversation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for wine, food, and celebration!
